Naked Baby

Since our old house doesn't have AC, our baby girl will most likely be spending a lot of time in just her diaper. She seems to be okay with it.

FYI-The band aid is from her vaccination yesterday. Poor girl got poked three times. It made Mommy and Daddy very sad.

First Bath

Sage had her first bath yesterday. She seemed to really enjoy it. I'm glad we have another relaxing activity to add to our bedtime routine.

Sage Emilia Smith

Being the early childhood developmental specialist dork that I am, we named Sage after my favorite early childhood philosophy "Reggio Emilia." The following is a brief summary of the philosophy.

The Reggio Emilia Approach is an educational philosophy focused on preschool and primary education. It was started by Loris Malaguzzi and the parents of the villages around Reggio Emilia in Italy after World War II. The destruction from the war, parents believed, necessitated a new, quick approach to teaching their children. They felt that it is in the early years of development that children are forming who they are as an individual. This led to creation of a program based on the principles of respect, responsibility, and community through exploration and discovery in a supportive and enriching environment based on the interests of the children through a self-guided curriculum.

A Girl and Her Dog

Marley is definitely warming up to Sage. He will peek inside her bassinet when she cries and has recently wanted to lay close to her. I think they are going to be great friends.

As you can see from the picture, we have given in to the "bugsy" (a.k.a. pacifier). We thought it was more sanitary than Daddy's finger and Mommy was becoming a human pacifier.

We also had our two week doctor visit with Dr. Kissam today and Sage is doing great. She is now 7lbs 1oz. Her pediatrician thinks that her eye goobers are clogged tear ducts and wants us to get off of the antibiotic ointment. The tear ducts should resolve themselves with time.

FYI-Sage's first bath will be tonight. We will try to post a video.

Sage's Schedule

5:30 am-9 pm Sleepy

9pm- 11pm-Wide awake and playful

11pm-1:30am Sleepy

1:3o am-5:30 am Wide awake

As you can see, we have a consistent schedule, but it's not necessarily one that Mommy and Daddy can live with. Brad and I never thought we would co-sleep but when you are so tired you will do anything to get your little one to give you a few hours of shut eye. Sage will usually sleep in her cradle next to our bed early on in the night but ends up in our bed by morning. She naps independently during the day in her pack and play. Mommy has taken all the safety precautions to ensure safe co-sleeping. There are definitely pros and cons to co-sleeping. A pro being that it strengthens breastfeeding and attachment and a con being that Brad and I never get alone time. Brad and I still want to reinforce and encourage independent sleeping so we will keep at it. Hopefully tonight will be better considering B-rad goes back to work tomorrow. If not, we will have one tired Daddy on our hands. I'm not going to lie, Mommy is a little nervous about Daddy going back to work. I think I'll make Auntie Melissa and Maggie Moo spend their Monday afternoons and Wednesday mornings at home with me to help out.

Eye Update: Her poor little eyes are still crusting over with yucky yellow goo. We are putting a antibiotic ointment in them three times a day, but so far it hasn't helped. The doctor at Primary Health on Saturday wasn't sure if it was an actual infection or a plugged tear duct. They took a culture so we should get back the results tomorrow. If they are still bad tomorrow morning we will be heading back to her pediatrician.

Soooooo Tired

Sage is still a little confused about her days and nights. Nights are getting better but she still has a good three to four hours were she is wide awake. During the day she can barely keep her eyes open. Besides a little eye infection in her left eye, Sage is doing well. She now weighs 6 lbs 12oz. Her pediatrician was surprised at how fast she gained her birth weight (plus an addition few ounces) back.

Baby Cousin

Magnolia came over yesterday to visit and requested that she hold "baby cousin." Melissa and I were a little nervous about the change for Maggie but she is doing so well with Sage. While holding Sage she pointed out her body parts to us. She also reminded Uncle Brad and Aunt Sara that we need to give baby cousin her blanket. I have a feeling that Sage and Magnolia are going to be lifelong besties.

We Finally Sleep

At the beginning of the night Brad and I were getting a little nervous because as soon as we mentioned going to bed, Sage decided it was play time. We kept her up for awhile and read aloud to her. It seemed to work because we had a great night last night. Sage slept most of the night and only woke a few times to eat and get a new diaper. Hopefully this will be a more consistent routine. Thanks Baby Sage for the sleep. We love you so.

First Tummy Time

We did Sage's first real tummy time today on a slick surface. She seemed to do well and wasn't too upset being naked and oiled up.

Update on sleep: We're not getting any!

First Doctor's Visit

Sage went to see Dr. Kissam's (her pediatrician) partner, Dr. Zieba today. Dr. Zieba is thinking that since Sara's milk has come in Sage's jaundice will clear up quickly. She is still going to have Sara and Brad take Sage into the hospital tomorrow to run another test and make sure.

Sage has gained 2 ounces already! Sara said that she's been getting really full during breast feeding and getting hiccups. I even got to hear some little hiccups over the phone.

Sage continues to keep Sara and Brad up all night, and severely sleep deprived. They are going to start some tummy time this evening in hopes that it will keep her a little more active, engaged, and hopefully exhausted for bedtime!

Welcome Home Baby Sage

Here's some photos of Sage that Zac took this evening when we went over for a visit.

Sara and Brad came home from the hospital this afternoon. Sage took a nice long rest after getting home. She seems to be breast feeding much better now. Sage had some troubles with a tight frendulum which was causing some breast feeding challenges, and she has some jaundice as well. Sara and Brad will take Sage into see Dr. Kissam tomorrow.

Sage's Doggy

Zac and I brought home a receiving blanket and hat of Sage's for Marley to smell, so she wasn't such a shock when he arrived home. He was quite interested in Sage's things, and he even curled up on Sage's blanket for a little rest. We dropped him off this evening and he was super happy to be home. He ran quickly through his house, smelling everything like it was new. He gave Sage a happy, slurpy kiss as well. Sara was worried Marley would be a little distant with her due to Sage requiring so much attention, but Marley had no problem cuddling right into Sara as she breast fed.

It looks like doggy and baby are going to do just fine.
